Winter in Boston. We all know the clichés about New Englanders…a hardy bunch with minimal fashion sense and the uncanny ability to stretch a simple roast chicken into an additional four meals. Then there’s Bostonians. If you watch the two movies out this year — The Town and
The Fighter — you know us as a rough and tumble bunch with short fuses, a passion for drugs and the uncanny ability to speak entire sentences that no one…not even our fellow Bostonians…understands.

Well, be we hardy New Englanders or rough and tumble Bostonians…none of us…not one of us…likes the way the winter of 2011 is shaping up. Two blizzards to date. A Nor’easter forecast for later this week. Throw in some freezing rain, a dollop of hail and three feet of slush…and good lord don’t forget the black ice. Yeech and double yeech. Every winter between New Year’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day, New Englanders celebrate another annual tradition – the: “I Pray that At This Time Next Year I live Somewhere Warm Where the Only Thing You Shovel is Dirt on Your Tulips.”

You know what my friends in San Diego and LA say? “It’s so boring here…70 degrees and sunny every day.” Oh, shut up! What other problems do you have? Bug bites dammit? This is the time of year when I pray for that kind of boredom and dream of a bug bite. Every winter I vow to find a place on the West Coast for January, February and March and never again bear the brunt of a New England winter.

I wish I was hardy…I want to be rough and tumble…but you know what…I’m just tired of winter…already. It’s January 19th and I’m dreaming of lobsters on Cape Cod, kayaking on the pond and lazy weekend days reading People Magazine and lounging on the deck. If I still have a deck. Who could tell under all that damn snow!

Well, there you have it…my Whine of the Month. If you’d like, feel free to join the Boomer Broads Whine of the Month Club. But FYI…I do not consider statements like “Ugh, I have to shave my legs every day because it’s so hot I need to wear shorts” whine-worthy. Surely, you can come up with something better than that. Take pity on us New Englanders. That hardy thing is just a stereotype. We want to be warm like you and walk on the beach every week. We live for air conditioning! Okay, that’s enough. I’m going to cheer myself up with those five magic words:
“Forty days til Spring Training”.
